ported this over from another site.

Just for the heck of it. I understand it may not be the most viable choice to run it as 3/8 is more plentiful, setups are more common, etc. etc.

But just for fun why not? I don't think it would be bad. Let's just run the numbers for a moment...

A 3120xp at 8.4hp running a 36" bar is boasting .23HP per inch of bar.
A 365sp at 4.6hp running a 20" bar is boasting .23HP per inch of bar.

A modded 365 would do better. Sure, 20" of .404 is only 7DL less than that of 3/8, but hey I'm lazy, less teeth to sharpen the better! Am I nuts to want to run .404 on my 365? I think it would just plain look neat.

pictures.

404 rsc vs 3/8

404x7 3/8x8 3/8x7

404x7 on top of 3/8x8 and 7 on top 8

25in 404 b&c, its full skip square, but i got a loop of rsc ready for it now.

i ran the 25in 404 as you see, so did jeremy, and i thought it ran pretty good. kinda supprised even with the full skip chain there wasnt anymore vibrations to speak of.

ported 460 handle the setup without issue. note its pretty much geared like a 3/8x8 with the 404x7 rim.

cost, the bars are the same for stihl es. chains are more but i got all mine on clearance =) so it was cheaper then 3/8s.

ill have few 404x8 rims coming, ill try on a 20in bar on. ill have some full comp rsc 404 20in loops ready by then.

I've got everything I need to run the .404 at the moment but I gotta swap the bar tip over. The only thing more expensive for me was the bar tip, had to buy a 3/8 setup to get a 20" bar. Chains are no different than 3/8 here.

Looks pretty B.A. to me :D

I like the comparisons in rims, neat that the .404 is a taller gear than a 3/8x7, but a hair shorter than 3/8x8. But as far as chain speed is concerned I'd have to sit down with some paper and a calculator to get it all figured out.

The 404 looks good on that 460, I wonder if my 660 would pull it...? :D

I was very suprised how well it ran it. I expected it to be much slower, but it had no problem whatsoever. Curious how the full comp chain will do...

I'm wondering if the fewer teeth help keep the speed up? I haven't done any measuring but just eyeballing it it looks like the cutters are a lot longer, but not necessarily a lot wider? I'm sure it's a little wider but just how much? From a racing standpoint sure it's probably slower but from a work standpoint I think the benefits might make it a good option..... We'll see.

I would like to try it out myself. The cutters aren't much wider at all. I've ground some for a guy and the cutters are a lot longer.

I just hope my chains are long enough. I came up with 65dl for a 20" bar in my research. Anybody know for sure on a husky setup?

Running .063 as that appeared to be the easiest to obtain. I wanted .058 as my current 18-20" setups run that. Oh well no biggie.

My results will be posted for everyone to see. And your phone might explode. Saw stats and chain stats, look out!!!! Lmao

Already have two chains and a bar in .063 so I'm gonna use that up. Appreciate the offer though. Probably not many guys in the market for a husky large mount .063 setup in 20" length  if this works out well I may fine tune it next time around. Gotta get me a square file soon and jump into that ballgame.

Well I went ahead and popped it all together. Got the .404 nose on the new bar and ran it in a pine log. She liked it, pulled it pretty well. The 65dl is a short chain for 20" - I think 66dl would have been a little more comfortable. I can't fit the .404 8-pin rim setup on there, there's just not enough left in the chain to make the loop. Maybe once the chain stretches a tad she'll go, but right now it's a tight fit. The new nose was tight also, not sure if they got too much paint in there or what, but that's taken care of after a couple blips of the throttle. Oregon must have let some bars slip past quality control in the first runs with the new paint scheme...... You'll see :yup:

Ya I trust you on that one. The .404 setup is strictly for firewood, bumming around stuff. Not expecting any racing with it on there. I got a loop of semi chisel to go with it also for that. Besides, my chains are too darn slow anyway I couldn't beat a beaver through a log if I didn't have a few extra rpms to help me out lol
